James Smythe
Professor of English
In the spring of 1972, James Smythe was an English professor and faculty leader at Pepperdine's Los Angeles campus. He was among the faculty invited to relocate to Malibu when it opened that fall. In Malibu, Smythe served as chair of the humanities division.1 Smythe was the chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee, a group advocating for faculty interests on the LA campus2 (a role that he continued to hold in the new version of that committee in Malibu).3
Smythe also served on a committee that designed the curriculum for the new campus. Among those serving with him on the committee were Jerry Hudson and Tony Ash.4
Smythe spoke at the 36th annual Founder's Day chapel in Malibu, where he reminisced about his friend George Pepperdine.1
Smythe served Pepperdine for 60 years, including as university archivist.5
